Research Highlights: Dana Drake
Dana is currently researching the methods of powder feedstock characterization for powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing (AM) processes. There is a need to standardize the methods by which AM powders are characterized, including how data are collected for particle size, particle size distribution, morphology, and other traits that may be linked to final build quality.
Dana has begun to test Inconel 718 AM powders to determine the most effective method to derive the needed powder information. Testing has included X-ray computed tomography (XCT), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Future tests will include laser diffractometery and atomic emission spectroscopy, among other methods. Finally, a host of analytic methods for calculating particle size, particle size distribution, and shape information will be compared.
